DISASTER VOLUNTEER PROJECT

The Sioux Empire American Red Cross is in the process of recruiting and training up to 130 individuals from small and medium-sized communities in Clay, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, Moody, Turner, Bon Homme, Charles Mix, Gregory and Yankton Counties. The Larson Family Foundation of Brookings announced the Chapter would receive a $10,000 grant for this project once the Chapter is able to raise an additional $10,000. The fundraising effort is underway and anyone wishing to contribute should write a check to Sioux Empire Red Cross Disaster Volunteer Project and mail to the Sioux Empire office.

The goal is to have more Red Cross disaster volunteers throughout the 10 counties to be able to respond more quickly to local disasters in helping families and emergency responders. Training will occur in each of the 10 counties and participants will need to commit to attending all the classes during the specified weekend for that county training. Over  20 hours of training will be provided in Family Services, Mass Care, Shelter Operations, CPR and First Aid. Classes will be held Friday evening, all day Saturday and the majority of Sunday.

Volunteers need to complete an application and fax to the Sioux Empire Red Cross at 336-9630. The Volunteer Application link will take you directly to the application. This should be completed as soon as possible and will be the mechanism for the Chapter to contact volunteers as to the date and location of training in their area. There is no cost to the volunteer for taking this training.

House fires are the number 1 disaster the Red Cross responds to. Local Red Cross volunteers will be a great asset to help their neighbors or friends when a disaster, such as a house fire, occurs. The response will be able to occur more quickly, which is an important intent of the project.

We are looking for volunteers who want to help their friends and neighbors who have experienced a natural disaster affecting their day-to-day lives. Please contact the Sioux Empire American Red Cross in Sioux Falls.

Below are the locations in each county that training is planned to occur. Volunteers will be from many communities within each county.
